RCMP puppy training recruit dies

DARTMOUTH, N.S. – One of the recent puppy recruits training with Nova Scotia RCMP has died.

RCMP confirmed Tuesday that Fourteen-week-old “Helo” passed away at the Atlantic Veterinary College on Monday due to medical complications following surgery.

It’s believed that earlier this month, Helo ingested rocks and rope, causing internal issues. He was given medical care immediately and later required three surgical procedures.

Helo was born on October 4, 2015 at the RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre in Innisfail, Alberta.

The puppy recruit landed in Nova Scotia in early December, where he was being socialized by a quarry — an RCMP member with an interest in becoming a dog handler — in Bible Hill with the eventual goal of entering police service dog training.

Helo, and his brother, Hamer, also recruited to Nova Scotia, made their media debut last month with the RCMP puppy program.

On Tuesday, RCMP extended a thank-you to staff with the Truro Veterinary Hospital and the University of Prince Edward Island Atlantic Veterinary College for Helo’s care.

Condolences can be shared on the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Nova Scotia Facebook page and on Twitter using the hashtag: #RIPHelo.
