Full-scale clean ordered for Victoria General Hospital

By Chris Halef and Andrew Pinsent

HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia Health Authority has implemented a full-scale clean of the Victoria General Hospital after many complaints of poor conditions at the south-end facility.

The announcement comes after several media reports and complaints over the past year, particularly in the past week, related to dirty and unsafe conditions for patients receiving care at the aging hospital.

Everton McLean, spokesman for the Nova Scotia Health Authority said he empathizes with patients and understands the hospital needs improvement to meet cleanliness standards.

“When our leadership looked at the situation, we looked at the facilities, and indeed we see where improvements need to be made,” McLean said.

“Despite the fact we do know a lot of our staff are very hard working and are doing a good job in many of the other areas, there are areas for improvement.”

McLean had no details of what the cleaning would entail but said additional resources and staff will be needed to meet standards, adding it would not interfere with the day-to-day operations at the VG.

“We’ve asked they [Crothall Healthcare Canada] deploy additional resources and a dedicated team to make sure that the standards that we expect do get preached,” he said.
