Clean-up set to continue this spring at former Aspotogan Sea Spa site

HALIFAX – It was meant to be a beacon of luxury amid the charming fishing villages of Nova Scotia’s South Shore.

Instead, for more than 20 years, the Aspotogan Sea Spa sat unfinished and abandoned atop a coastal cliff until it was demolished.

Now only rubble remains of the site west of Halifax.

Allen Webber, a veteran local municipal politician, recalls listening to the pitch for the sprawling seaside hotel from a German physician with a mix of excitement and skepticism in the early ’90s.

Webber, now warden for the Municipality of the District of Chester, says the idea of a resort on the foggy peninsula didn’t make much sense to locals used to the view.

The property was bought by Halifax development firms Southwest Properties and Armco Capital when the original investors ran out of money.

Ben Young, vice-president of land development for Southwest, says clean-up of the property will take place this spring following last month’s demolition.

He says the area will be redeveloped as private residential lots.
