Rainfall warning issued for Halifax

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Halifax.

NEWS 95.7 meteorologist Richard Zurawski expects us to get over 30 millimetres with the drops starting to fall this afternoon.

He warned winds gusts could reach 70 km/hr and rainfall will be heavy at times.

Hydroplaning, localized flooding and poor visibility could all be an issue on the afternoon commute, and it’s going to get worse overnight.

“Temperatures are going to drop from about 8 degrees today, to about -2 or -3 degrees overnight, that means we’re going to get a couple centimetres of snow, ” he said. “Everything is going to freeze and tomorrow it is going to be a slippery drive.”

He adds the heavy rainfall will likely prevent crews from being able to salt or brine roads before the freeze comes.

A special weather statement has also been issue for this weekend.

Zurawski said it’s still a long way out, and the track of the storm will determine what kind of precipitation will dominate the weather, but right now it’s looking more like snow.

“We could get 15 to 20 centimetres at this juncture,” he said. “How much we’re going to get, whether it’s snow or rain, that is the question mark.”
