HALIFAX – A man and woman from Dartmouth have been charged in connection with a “potential threat” on Thursday that prompted a number of the company’s buildings to be evacuated.
Regional Police received third-hand information around 7 a.m. on Thursday about the potential threat, which led to the evacuation of the company’s buildings and an increased RCMP presence in the Barnes Road area near the Halifax Airport.
Police said around 9 a.m. Thursday, officers arrested Derek Russell Strum, 48, at an apartment on Lakefront Road in Dartmouth, where a police search led to the seizure of ammunition and magazines for firearms.
Following up on more information, police also executed search warrants at homes on Cuisak Street in Dartmouth, where nothing was found, and on Matheson Court in Nine Mile River, where officers seized a locked gun case believed to contain a firearm.
Diana Lynn Richard, 46, was also arrested in connection with the case just after 5 p.m. Thursday on Jackson Road in Dartmouth.
The pair are each facing four charges of possession of a prohibited device in connection to four overcapacity cartridge magazines that were recovered during the police search.
Richard was released on a promise to appear while Strum was scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on Friday.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police or crimestoppers.
