One year ago, Halifax was hit by a snowfall that many believe rivaled White Juan.
NEWS 95.7’s Richard Zurawski says a massive amount of snow fell on the province.
“We had 60+ centimetres of snow right across Nova Scotia, and it was quite a storm,” he said. “Coupled with the snow, we had winds gusting to 70 or 80 km/hr, we had white outs, we had power outages, and we had days off.”
The snow was so deep, Halifax Transit and Canada Post both had to cancel their operations, on-street parking was banned for several days and much of the municipality had to be shut down.
During White Juan, Halifax received about a metre of snow, but what made last year’s storm significant was the amount we already had piled up on the ground before the system arrived.
“It felt like about the 20th storm of the winter, it seemed we couldn’t go more than 3 or 4 days without getting another snow storm,” Zurawski explained. “It was the snowiest winter I’ve ever seen in almost 30-years in Nova Scotia.”
He remembers we still had traces of snow and ice in some areas in June.
As for this year’s winter, the end is near, spring officially arrives Sunday.
