Two arrested after weapons call at Millwood High

MIDDLE SACKVILLE, N.S. – A tense situation for two area schools after a lockdown was in place during the noon hour for students at Millwood High School Tuesday afternoon.

RCMP corporal Jennifer Clarke says officers responded to the area around Millwood High School to investigate a complaint.

“Police were on scene for a weapons complaint in that area. As a result, two people were arrested and we are continuing our investigation,” said Clarke.

Police say one male youth was arrested at the scene and a second male youth was arrested off-site, shortly afterwards, adding they seized a duffel bag of weapons and ammunition from the woods near the school.

Clarke says the duffel bag that was recovered contained a pair of long guns and two BB-style guns along with some ammunition but didn’t elaborate on whether the ammunition that was found matched any of the weapons which were seized.

In addition to Millwood High, Halifax Regional School Board spokesperson Doug Hadley says Millwood Elementary was placed under a hold and secure order as a precaution.

“What that means is that you restrict access to and from the building. But you can move within the building as you normally would. So it’s not on the same level of severity in regards to keeping the students safe,” said Hadley.

Clarke says the lock down and the hold and secure were lifted at approximately 1:00 p.m., adding the police investigation is ongoing.

Later in the day, Lockview High in Fall River was also placed on lockdown after police responded to a weapons complaint.

The school came out of lockdown just after 3:00 p.m., going into hold and secure and were dismissed at the usual dismissal time shortly after.

Police say the two male youths arrested following the Millwood High lockdown both face multiple weapons charges.
