HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s immigration minister announced a fund Tuesday for local groups who are involved in the effort to welcome Syrian refugees settle into the province.
Minister Lena Diab says the fund provides grants of up to a $1,000 to community and sponsor groups so they can perform a number different initiatives including community picnics, cooking classes, art events, and conversation groups.
Diab adds the fund will also support honorariums for volunteers such as interpreters and language instructors who have gone above and beyond in helping refugees integrate into Nova Scotia.
“The way Nova Scotians are welcoming refugees shows what we can achieve when we work together,” said Diab.
Sarah Napier, president and CEO of United Way Halifax, was also at the announcement and says the goal is not only to welcome Syrian refugees, but to also build friendships and a sense of belonging for our province’s newest citizens.
“A strong sense of belonging is key to a thriving and resilient community,” said Napier.
The province has allocated a hundred-thousand dollars for the new fund as part of the 2016-2017 budget.
