Construction company fined $70k for 2013 workplace death

HALIFAX – A construction company has been fined $70,000 after the workplace death of one of its employees.
Alan Fraser, 21, died after falling from the sixth floor of a building that was under construction in Clayton Park in 2013.
Earlier this spring, Parkland Construction plead guilty to a charge of lacking fall protection when workers were at a height of three metres or more under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Fraser’s father, Wally Fraser, tells Metro Halifax he doesn’t believe that the fine is going to be much of a deterrent for a company the size of Parkland, but said a bursary set up in his son’s name is the greatest thing he’s ever seen.
A portion of the fine, $37,000 worth, will go to Nova Scotia Community College to create a fund for students that are enrolled in the Occupational Health and Safety program.
