Major illegal tobacco seizure in Halifax

DARTMOUTH – A large amount of illegal tobacco was seized on Tuesday, following a seven-month investigation by Service Nova Scotia’s Compliance and Special investigations unit.
Service Nova Scotia’s director of audit and enforcement Bernie Meagher says three rental storage units on Tacoma Drive and Windmill Road in Dartmouth in Dartmouth were searched, which resulted in a number of items seized.
“We seized 87 cases of smuggled tobacco which is about 4,350 cartons of tobacco all together. We also seized about $3,000 in cash. Two cars, a pickup truck, and a cargo trailer were also seized,” said Meagher.
Meagher says the cigarettes have a street value of about $152,000, and the estimated loss of tobacco tax revenue is approximately $240,000.
Three Halifax area men and an Ontario resident were arrested as a result of the investigation.
Two of the Halifax area men and the Ontario man have been released are scheduled to appear in court August 24, while the other Halifax area man was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday on a separate matter.
