RCMP say two teens are dead after being hit by a train in Lantz.
It happened at around 1:40 a.m. near the intersection of Highway 2 and Mader Street.
Police say the southbound train was en route to Halifax when it hit the pair on the tracks.
They say a 17-year-old girl from Lantz and an 18-year-old woman, a former exchange student from Germany who was living in Lantz, died at the scene.
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jennifer Clarke said it did not happen at a train crossing and that someone on the train called 911 to report the collision.
She said she can’t speculate as to why the two were on the tracks at that time.
“We’re on the scene collecting evidence and trying to figure out what happened to cause this horrible incident,” said Clarke.
Clarke said a drone will be used to help with the investigation, which she expects to last most of the day.
The families of the deceased have been notified.
