HALIFAX – Some welcome rain is helping the the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources in the fight against the largest fire in the province.
As of Sunday morning, the DNR said the fire at Seven Mile Lake in Annapolis County was 70 per cent contained after receiving some rain overnight on Saturday.
The blaze remains steady at 395 hectares.
Highway 8 in the area of the fire will remain closed all weekend as water bombers continue their assault. The closure will be re-assessed come Monday.
Meantime, the DNR said there are no significant changes to the other fires burning in the province.
The two other largest fires in the province, at Ten Mile Lake in Queens County and Maitland Bridge in Annapolis County both remain 100 per cent contained at 8 and 21 hectares in size respectively.
The blaze at Ten Mile Lake gave crews trouble on Friday because two areas breached the fire line but were still contained with the help of air support.
A fire at Perch Lake in Pictou County is still about 10 hectares in size and has been 100 per cent contained, while the wild at Round Hill in Annapolis County has been declared officially out.
Though Nova Scotia is finally seeing some rain, the travel restrictions and burn bans continue to be in place.
