HALIFAX – The Halifax Regional School Board has voted to close Highland Park Junior High and ask the province for a new school to combine students with those in grades seven to nine at Oxford School.
Approval from the Department of Education is still needed to fund the new build whose location would also be decided by the province.
Metro Halifax reports Wednesday’s meeting was attended by about 100 people and many were upset St. Catherine’s School was not included in the review because it sends french immersion students to Oxford School.
Metro reports the board decided to move forward despite some calling the review “flawed,” because board members felt it would be a waste of the work done to this point and insulting to those who dedicated the time to it.
HRSB also voted to review 17 schools in the Cole Harbour High and Auburn High family of schools to look at declining enrolments in some schools in the area.
Primary to grade six students at Oxford School will also be kept in mind for a future review after that motion was approved by the board, who also approved a request for provincial cash for renovations at St. Joseph’s A. McKay, Joseph Howe and St. Stephen’s Elementary Schools during the meeting.
