All NSCC campuses closed after threats, all PEI schools closed

HALIFAX – All NSCC campuses in Nova Scotia have been closed after bomb threats were received at three different locations in the province and as police across the country deal with similar threats.

Halifax Regional Police said an anonymous threat was made against the NSCC Institute of Technology campus on Leeds Street in Halifax just after 8 a.m. Wednesday, prompting the school to be evacuated and police to search the campus.

Officers and a K9 unit searched the building Wednesday afternoon but noted nothing suspicious had been found and students were being given police escorts to their parked cars on campus one at a time.

Similar threats were also received at NSCC’s Marconi campus in Sydney and its Annapolis Valley Campus in Middleton around the same time on Wednesday morning, prompting the school to evacuate and close its doors for the day.

NSCC later announced it was closing all campuses as a precaution and say local police are handling the investigations and the incidents are believed to be related at this point, but the investigation continues.

In Sydney, Cape Breton University has also been closed for the day as a precaution.

Officials with Dalhousie University and Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, which remain unaffected, have said they continue to monitor the situation.

All PEI schools evacuated over faxed threats

RCMP in Prince Edward Island have evacuated all schools in that province after threats were faxed into the RCMP Headquarters in Ottawa Wednesday morning that indicated bombs had been planted at several schools, but police say no threat has been found.

19,000 students were evacuated to safe locations and later met with busses and parents around the province, as police continue to investigate.

RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Kevin Bailey said in an update just after noon Atlantic Time that several other schools have been shuttered across PEI and school officials have also cancelled all evening activities at the province’s schools.

Winnipeg police indicate similar threats

In a press release, the Winnipeg School Division said they had also received a fax message containing a threat to all schools similar to those being experienced in Nova Scotia and PEI.

The release also indicated similar reports of threats were received at a location in the United States.

Winnipeg Police believe the threat to be unfounded and said they are working with school board officials to “ensure all reasonable safety measures are being employed.”
