Bedford Highway re-opens after structure fire

HALIFAX – The Bedford Highway has re-opened to traffic after a structure fire near The Esquire Motel shuttered the road for over two hours during Tuesday morning rush hour.

Fire crews were called to the scene around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday after a caller reported smoke coming from the building at 805 Bedford Highway, which prompted the closure of the road between Southgate Drive to Larry Uteck Boulevard in both directions as crews battled the blaze.

Halifax Fire said the bulk of the fire was quickly knocked down and crews finished monitoring hotspots before the road was re-opened just after 9 a.m.

Traffic backups were noted in the area on Tuesday morning but no injuries have been reported at this time and the cause of the fire and total damages are still unknown.
