HALIFAX – Two regional councillors from Halifax’s suburban areas said they will not support a petition asking for a ban on indoor wood burning.
City staff have been working on a report for council for about a year now after a petition signed by 26 people was turned in last year.
Lisa Blackburn represents District 14 and said this doesn’t sit well with her constituents.
“I’ve had a lot of emails and phone calls about this,” she said. “Because this is how, this is the difference between being able to heat their home. Stay in their homes and having to sell because their home is too expensive to heat.”
District 11 Councillor Stephen Adams says he can’t support this, but he is sympathetic to those who are impacted by smoke.
“I understand that, but to ban indoor wood burning appliances and wood stoves just doesn’t make any sense.”
Blackburn said there are thousands of people in HRM who have fireplaces, or wood stoves and use them for heat. She believes many of the problems with smoke can be solved through education.
