Fire at historic North Preston church a ‘devastating’ blow: member

By News Staff and Canadian Press

NORTH PRESTON – A mid-morning fire has badly damaged a church in North Preston that’s over 100 years old.

The fire at the century-old St.Thomas Baptist Church on Simmonds Road was reported at 9:39 a.m. Wednesday.

No one was hurt in the fire but the wooden building was severely damaged with a large charred hole in the rear of the building.

RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Clarke said foul play is not suspected.

Some members of the church tell the Canadian Press it’s a devastating blow to the community, which uses it as a central gathering spot for services, choir recitals, plays and other events.
