Parking at a premium near the Commons as Play On! tournament hits Halifax

Expect road closures, restricted parking and a lot of people carrying hockey sticks if you’re going near the Halifax Common this weekend.

Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! event has taken over that area.

The Emera Oval is shut down along with Trollope Street and a section of Cogswell Street for the street hockey tournament.

There’s no parking on those streets, or on the North and Central Common, and with a softball tournament scheduled for the North Common, the municipality says to expect parking to be at a premium in that area.

They warn any vehicles parked on the Halifax Common could be ticketed and towed without warning.

Play On! recommends parking in the Park Lane Parkade off Dresden Row adding participants won’t be able to park at Citadel High on Saturday as there’s a special event at Spatz Theatre.

Event organizers ask spectators and players who choose to park in residential areas to obey no parking zones.

If you’re heading to the event and need to drop off or pick up a hockey player, you can do that on North Park Street just north of the roundabout, or on Bell Road between Robie and Trollope.

The drop-and-dash-zones are marked with ‘Special Event’ signage and HRM is warning drivers to stay in their cars while waiting for hockey players, as any unattended parked cars could be ticketed or towed.

Cogswell between Robie and North Park isn’t expected to reopen until 10 p.m. Sunday, Trollope Street should be reopened by 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
