Halifax Regional Council has voted to shut down the Devonshire Arena in the north-end of Halifax, which will be demolished, and to sell both the Gray and Bowles arenas in Dartmouth.
The LeBrun arena in Bedford will stay open for now, with staff expected to review its future at a later date.
Darren Cossar, executive director of Hockey Nova Scotia, said he’s disappointed with the result.
“I believe that all the ice sports were hoping to see the Gray remain open for at least one year so we could truly get a view of the landscape and what that would mean to the ice sport community,” he said.
However, with a new four pad in Dartmouth is scheduled to open this fall, Cossar added he’s hopeful they’ll be able to find a way to make it all work.
“We’re still gaining one ice surface from what we had previously, so that’s a positive.”
The numbers show the average age of these four facilities is 44-years-old and they have combined deferred maintenance of $3.8 million.
