The CEO of Nova Scotia Power says the company has removed all customers’ social insurance numbers from its systems.
The utility had committed to deleting all SINs by March 31 and Vivek Sood says outside firm KPMG has confirmed they have been removed.
Speaking to Nova Scotia Today, Sood said Nova Scotia Power is committed to earning back trust after last year’s cyberattack.
“I can tell you the work we have done now on cyber has been truly industry leading, at this point,” he said. “We have third parties come in and monitor our system. We have significant education and training going on.”
According to Sood, social insurance numbers were kept in the past for authentication, but they’re not used now, with the exception of tax purposes for employees.
This all comes after the company suffered a ransomware attack in March 2025 that saw a hacker access roughly 375,000 records of current customers as well as 540,000 former customer records.
Canada’s privacy commissioner recently determined the attack began after an employee clicked on a pop-up, resulting in malware being downloaded and installed on the utility’s systems.
