HALIFAX – The funeral service for a Nova Scotia RCMP officer killed on the side of a New Brunswick highway last week will be held in Moncton, N.B. Wednesday.
Cst. Francis Deschenes, 35, was killed after he stopped near Memramcook, N.B., last Tuesday evening to help the driver of an SUV change a tire and a cargo van slammed into his cruiser.
A funeral mass for Deschenes will be held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Moncton, N.B. on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
An obituary posted by Cobb’s Funeral Home said Deschenes was born in Edmundston, N.B. and joined the RCMP in 2004.
The 12-year veteran was serving in the Nova Scotia Traffic Services Division when he was killed and was recognized for heroism in 2013 when he received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal.
The driver of the cargo van that slammed into Deschenes cruiser has since been released without charges but police say the investigation is ongoing.
