Nova Scotia’s 63rd General Assembly sits Thursday: What you need to know

By Andrew Pinset

HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia legislature will resume sitting Thursday with the speech from the throne to be delivered by Lt. Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc.

The throne speech will be broadcast online as LeBlanc lays out priorities for the upcoming session.

Premier Stephen McNeil is leading his government into a second consecutive majority mandate and one of the first priorities will be passing the budget first introduced before last spring’s election call, which will remain mostly the same.

Pemier McNeil tells the Canadian Press that new anti-cyberbullying legislation will be tabled during this session after the province’s previous cyber safety act was struck down by the Nova Scotia supreme court in 2015.

The law was the first of its kind in Canada and in response to the high profile Rehtaeh Parsons case in our province. The premier says he wants to get as much public feedback through the amendments process before being debated at province house.

McNeil says the government is conscious that the previous law was struck down by the courts and it does remain at least possible the bill’s passage could be put off after the fall session.

Today will also see 13 new MLA’s officially take their seats for the first time and it’s expected that Speaker Kevin Murphy will be elected for a second straight term.
