RCMP seize 200,000 contraband cigarettes

By Meghan Groff

Service Nova Scotia says Halifax District RCMP have arrested an Ottawa man and seized a 'significant amount' of illegal tobacco.

Police partnered with Service Nova Scotia's Compliance and Special Investigations Unit to arrest the 54-year-old in Bedford Sunday.

They seized 200,000 contraband cigarettes, which they say has an estimated provincial tax value of more than $55,000 and a federal tax value of around $42,000.

The suspect will be in Dartmouth court at the end of January.

Service Nova Scotia says the amount of illegal tobacco in Nova Scotia has gone down from 30 per cent of all tobacco consumed to less than 10 per cent.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers, where callers qualify for a cash reward of up to $2,000 if police lay charges based on the tip.
