Halifax making ‘progress’ with regards to open data, says new index

By Katie Hartai

Halifax ranks 28th in a recent cross-Canada index comparing the accessibility of municipal information.

It's called the Public Sector Digest Open Cities Index.

Open data is information that is freely available without any type of restriction or charge to access it. In a municipal government, this could include everything from election results to pot holes.

The index itself is a survey that goes out to communities across the country, to measure things like the quality and quantity of information made available and its impact.

The digest's Editor in Chief Tyler Sutton says Halifax did quite well compared to the other 61 municipalities surveyed

“For Halifax, certainly some progress and we're seeing some great signs of what will come for the Halifax Regional Municipality,” Sutton said.

Halifax did the best in the 'open data impact' category where it scored 38 per cent – the same as the national average.

It was however five per cent lower than the 43 per cent national average for its 'readiness to improve'.
