Hundreds evacuated after fire at Fenwick Tower

By Mark Hodgins

Hundreds of people had to be evacuated from Halifax's tallest building Wednesday afternoon after a fire broke out on one of the upper floors.

Halifax Fire responded to a call around 12:30 at Fenwick Tower.

Division Commander Kevin Reade tells Global News firefighters were able to get the fire out completely thanks to the building's sprinkler system.

“When our crews arrived on scene we had a fire in one unit, the crews assisted in putting it out and from then on it was dealing with water damage,” said Reade. “We checked for extension on the lower floors and upper floors. No extension, just extensive water damage.”

Red Cross officials were on the scene ready to help in case any residents were in need of help, but the decision was made late in the afternoon to allow tenants back into the building.

There's no word on the cause of the fire.
