Halifax Regional School Board explains why they kept schools open

By Meghan Groff

Wednesday's snowfall total was higher than originally forecast, giving students hope for a Thursday snow day.

Some school boards in the province decided to keep kids home, but there were no cancellations in the Halifax Regional School Board.

The board says forecasters reported the precipitation had ended in the region by 5 a.m.

They also consulted with the municipality, and were told most main streets had already been cleared, plowing had started in residential areas, and crews were also taking care of sidewalks.

At 5:30 a.m., they were told by Stock Transportation that buses would be able to operate as usual “using caution on gravel roads.”

“The HRSB takes great care when making the decision to cancel school in the event of severe or inclement weather,” they said in their statement.
