A tentative agreement has been reached between the Halifax Regional School Board and the union representing support staff.
This comes nearly four years after the last collective agreement expired.
Chris Melanson, the president of CUPE local 5047, confirming union members voted 96 per cent in favour of a tentative agreement this past weekend.
A conciliator was brought in back in November and Melanson says he believes it helped both sides come to an agreement.
“It allows the conciliator to look at both side's wants,” said Melanson. “And in a bit better of a timeframe tries to get those issues brought forward and see if there's some reconciliation within some agreement.”
Melanson says some of the issues that prolonged negotiations included some of the contract language and school closures.
The agreement has yet to be ratified by the school board, but Melanson doesn't believe there will be any issues there, and anticipates it will be approved later this month.
