Another heat warning issued for Halifax

By Meghan Groff

Fire up your fans and crank up your air conditioners.

A heat warning has been issued for almost every part of the Maritimes, including in Halifax as Environment Canada expects a “very warm” air mass to settle in Tuesday and stick around into the Natal Day weekend.

Environment Canada issues the warning when humidex values could reach 36 or higher for two or more consecutive days, or when temperatures are expected to hit at least 29 degrees Celsius with minimum night-time temperatures of 16 degrees Celsius or higher for at least two days in a row.

They say daytime highs should approach 30 degrees Celsius over inland areas of Nova Scotia.

“Humidity levels will gradually increase on Wednesday pushing humidex values to 36 or more,” forecasters say.

High temperatures and humid conditions can elevate the risk of heat stroke and heat exhaustion, especially for those working or exercising outdoors.

The Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness recommends the following for preventing heat-related illnesses:

  • drinking plenty of water
  • staying in shaded or cool areas
  • taking frequent breaks if you have to work outside
  • wearing lightweight, light-coloured clothing
  • avoiding leaving children, infants or pets unattended in vehicles
  • checking on older neighbours and others vulnerable to heat-related illness, and offer air-conditioned shelter and water if needed
