ReconciliACTION campaign being launched at MSVU

By CityNews Halifax Staff

Students will be gathering at Mount Saint Vincent University Wednesday night to celebrate the launch of the ReconciliACTION campaign.

The goal for the event is to draw attention to the importance enacting one specific recommendation in the Maritimes made in 2015 by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

“We call upon post-secondary institutions to create university and college degree and diploma programs in Aboriginal languages,” says the 16th call to action from the commission.

Deputy chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students Nova Scotia, Nikki Jamieson, says the issue is around language representation; Canada's official languages of English and French receive substantial funding.

“Furthermore, we're hearing things like these courses could be available, or the institutions do have course listings, but there are issues around staffing the classes,” Jamieson said. “We see this as a failure of academia.”

Students will gather at The Mount Wednesday starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Seton Auditorium.
