German swimming instructor convicted of abusing 37 children

BERLIN — A swimming instructor in southwestern Germany has been convicted of 130 counts of sexually abusing 37 young girls he taught.

The dpa news agency reported that the 34-year-old man, whose last name wasn’t given for privacy reasons, was sentenced to 12 years in prison Monday in Baden-Baden regional court.

He abused the girls, between ages 4 and 12, in the pool and changing room from October 2015 until his arrest in September 2017. He filmed some of the acts and underwater footage was used as evidence.

The defendant, who threatened to kill two 5-year-old victims if they told their parents, apologized, saying he “deeply regretted” his actions.

Because of the severity of his crimes, the court ordered that he be kept in detention even after he has served his sentence.
