Elections Nova Scotia reminds citizens of campaign sign regulations during by-election

By Victoria Walton

The Sackville-Cobequid provincial electoral district by-election has been called, and will be held on June 18.

Elections Nova Scotia issued a release on Tuesday morning outlining the Elections Act, which requires such advertising to be at least 60 metres away from any voting location.

The act allows tenants of multi-unit apartments, or owners of condos, to post signs on their own property, but the size and type of poster are subject to reasonable regulation by landlords or condominium corporations.

The Elections Act defines election advertising as any ad by candidates, parties or third parties, which “promotes or opposes any candidate or registered party, or takes a position on an issue with which a candidate or registered party is associated.”

In addition, all advertising must include the phrase “authorized by the official agent for” and list the name of the candidate or registered party.

A third party — a group or individual not directly involve din the election — who wishes to spend $500 or more, must register with Elections Nova Scotia.
