The Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences Building is reopening this morning for usual operations which means regularly scheduled classes are back, and staff are permitted to use their workspaces once again.
According to Dalhousie University, the water systems in the McCain building have been flushed and drained six times since the abrupt closure last Thursday morning.
Samples taken Friday came back yesterday within the Regulated Canadian Drinking Water Standards, with no detectable levels of the chemicals that had been introduced. The samples were taken from five separate areas of the building, covering all three floors, and all four corners of the McCain building.
As a precautionary measure, staff are replacing the filters in all of the building's water fountains.
Last week, the university said two chemicals were inadvertently added to the water supply because of an issue with the building's heating system. The chemicals accidentally introduced are a descaling chemical that includes citric acid, and the other is a solution containing propylene glycol, which is used to prevent pipes from freezing.
Dalhousie is reminding anyone who may have consumed drinking water between 8 and 9:30 in the morning last Thursday (October 31st) to contact the student Health and Wellness Centre if they have concerns.
