Nova Scotians urged to vacation in Nova Scotia

This week is National Tourism Awareness Week in Canada, and this year, the term shop local takes on a whole new meaning.
That’s because the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia is urging Nova Scotians to explore, and spend their vacation dollars, in the province.
Darlene Grant Fiander is the President of TIANS, who says it’s important to make sure we reinvigorate our tourism industry as restrictions begin to loosen because tourism is our number one service export, it employs almost 50,000 people, and had a revenue of $2.7 billion last year.
Fiander tells News 95.7, here in Nova Scotia, it should be fairly easy to practice physical distancing and enjoy a vacation.
“It will be easy to social distance, our wide open spaces, our natural assets, our incredible beaches, it’s going to be a great time to discover our province.”
She also says the wineries, craft breweries, restaurants, and UNESCO World Heritage sites are great reasons to visit sites all over the province.
Fiander also points to the rough time Nova Scotians have faced as we layer tragedy on top of tragedy.
“We live in an incredible place, and it will help all of us in the rehealing that we need to go through to get through a difficult year,” she says.
She also says she’s heard from some operators in the province who are already starting to book cottages, and she hopes to hear more of that in the coming weeks. Fiander also says, some seasonal operators around the province are looking to stay open later into the fall to help recoup some of their losses due to COVID-19.
