Today is Stop the Violence Day in Nova Scotia

By Matt Brand

Eight years ago, Quentrel Provo started Stop the Violence, Spread the Love.

It was in honour of his cousin Kaylin Diggs, who was killed outside of a Halifax bar in 2012.

He was 26-years-old.

June 10th is now officially Stop the Violence Day in Nova Scotia, and while it usually coincides with a march, this year Provo is doing something a little different.

With so many marches happening in support of Black Lives Matter, Provo is asking people to get out of their comfort zone, and do something nice for a stranger who doesn’t look like them.

“I’m challenging everyone to do an act of kindness towards someone from a different race. And if you don’t know someone from a different race, get to know someone from a different race,” he tells The Sheldon MacLeod Show.

Provo says the act of kindness can be something as small as holding a door open for someone, or just paying someone a compliment online.

He says it’s really all about making a human connection, and breaking down barriers beyond today.

And to mark the occasion, Provo is asking people to wear the colour red, because while we may have different coloured skin, we all bleed the same colour.
