Fire at north end apartment complex quickly brought under control (update, 3 photos)

Firefighters spend early Friday afternoon at the intersection of Isleville and Almon streets.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency were called to the apartment complex at 5659 Almon St. over the noon hour.

“Our firefighters found fire on the roof above the 8th floor of the building in the vicinity of the penthouse,” said assistant chief Chuck Bezanson. “Lots of residents in Halifax I'm sure saw the smoke coming from that penthouse.” (see video below)

Investigators are now on scene trying to track down the exact origin.

The fire was brought under control quickly and no one was hurt.

“The sprinkler system had activated but there was still sufficient fire on the roof of the penthouse area that required an attack by stretching hose lines,” Bezanson explained.

He said fighting fires on the upper floors of tall buildings can be a challenge. Crews are able to take elevators part way up, then use the stairwells to get closer to the flames.

“Water supply is another challenge,” he said. “In this case, they were able to connect to the interior standpipe system of the building.”

Bezanson said there's significant damage to the penthouse area, and around half-a-dozen apartment residents are dealing with water damage, however most people living in the building have been able to return to their homes.
