Booster appointments open for Nova Scotians age 50 and above (update)

By Chris Halef

UPDATE: The province says anyone age 50 and up can now book boosters.

Booster doses are administered at least 168 days after the primary series.

Anyone eligible for a booster dose can schedule an appointment online at https://novascotia.ca/vaccination or by calling the toll-free line: 1-833-797-7772.

Nova Scotians are encouraged to be patient if an appointment is not immediately available in their local area. Appointments are continually added to clinics across the province.

Starting this Thursday, Nova Scotians age 50 and older who have been fully vaccinated for at least six months will be able to book an appointment for their booster shot.

Premier Tim Houston and Dr. Robert Strang, chief medical officer of health, made the announcement during Tuesday's COVID briefing.

Houston defended the province's approach to rolling out the boosters, saying vaccine supply is an issue.

“By mid-January, almost 640,000 Nova Scotians will tip over that six-month mark,” he said. “We don't have 640,000 booster doses. We're working with the federal government to increase our supply but so is everybody else. Today, we have around 100,000 doses.”

Houston said he wants the most vulnerable residents to get their booster first while avoiding “Hunger Games-type” scenarios.

Dr. Strang said they are asking those under 50-years-old to be patient.

“Our goal is to open booster dose appointments to those under 50 as soon as possible in the new year,” said Strang. “But as the premier said, we have always followed the principle that we will not open appointments until we have certainty of vaccine supply.”
