Former federal and Nova Scotia NDP Leader Alexa McDonough has died

The former federal and Nova Scotia NDP leader Alexa McDonough has died.

Nova Scotia NDP Leader Gary Burrill confirming the news that the long-time politician has passed away at the age of 77.

Burrill tweeting Saturday morning “The people of Nova Scotia stand moved and diminished today before the passing of Alexa McDonough. No one has been held in the public mind and heart of this province with the same mix of affection and respect, as has Alexa.”

McDonough was elected as NS NDP Leader in 1980 and served in the provincial legislature until 1994.

She won the leadership of the federal NDP in 1995 and was elected in the riding of Halifax in 1997.

McDonough stepped down from the leadership of the party in 2003 but remained in the House of Commons until 2005 before retiring from politics.

McDonough was inducted into the Order of Canada in 2009.
