South end intersection to be closed for almost two months

By Meghan Groff

A major south end intersection will be closed for almost two months while Halifax Water replaces aging water mains.

South Park Street at University Avenue/Morris Street will shut down on Monday, May 2.

Only eastbound emergency vehicles will be able to pass through. There will also be local traffic access between Spring Garden Road and South Street.

The closure will affect several Halifax Transit buses and routes  4, 10, 90, 135, 136, 137, 138, 158, 159, 161, 165, 168A, 168B will have to detour.

Traffic delays in the area are expected, and pedestrians and bicyclists may also be impacted.

The work includes separating stormwater discharge from the wastewater system.

“Once completed, stormwater will be redirected into the harbour, while the wastewater will continue to flow to the Halifax Wastewater Treatment Facility for treatment,” Halifax Water said.

“This reduces the amount of stormwater entering the wastewater system and will reduce excess strain on the area's wastewater treatment facilities, thus helping them operate more efficiently and making them more reliable for decades to come.”

HRM says the intersection is expect to reopen by the end of June.
