Expanded seniors care grant open for applications

By Tyler Dunne

Low-income seniors in Nova Scotia can now apply for two grants to help alleviate the costs of things like home heating, healthcare services and household chores.

The Seniors Care Grant program provides eligible applicants up to $500 to cover the costs of services such as snow removal, transportation, and grocery and medication delivery.

The list has also expanded this year to include coverage of phone and internet costs, as well as health services like dental work, physical therapy and foot care.

There is also a new one-time grant of $250 to help with the cost of heating a home.

The second grant is available to eligible Nova Scotians even if they already received money via the Seniors Care Grant or Heating Assistance Rebate Program last year.

“We know that rising costs, growing healthcare needs, and challenges completing household chores make it difficult for some older Nova Scotians to live comfortably in their own homes,” said Barbara Adams, Minister of Seniors and Long-Term Care, in a news release.

“By expanding the types of services supported through the Seniors Care Grant and helping with heating costs, we are giving seniors the help they need and the peace of mind they deserve.”

People who previously received a senior care grant between Dec. 1, 2021, and May 21, 2022, can reapply for the new grant.

Applicants must retain receipts for services they wish to have covered, live in a home or apartment they own or rent, and have an annual net household income of $37,500 or less.

In the program's first year, more than 27,000 Nova Scotians received a seniors care grant, and the government is investing around $29 million in grants this year.

More information about the grants, including how to apply, who is eligible, and eligible services, is available:

Applications close on Mar. 31, 2023.
