Two men charged with thefts from Halifax mosques

By CityNews Halifax Staff

Regional police have charged two men for thefts at two different mosques last week.

On April 12, police received a report that two men stole money from donation boxes inside a mosque on Matthias Street and then fled on foot.

Two days later, police received another report of a second theft at the same mosque where a man stole money from the donation boxes before fleeing on foot.

That same day, officers arrested a 39-year-old man near Faulkner Street in Dartmouth and a 32-year-old man near Hillcrest Drive in Halifax, in connection to those thefts.

Police say they later discovered the 39-year-old man was also responsible for a theft from donation boxes at a mosque on Larry Uteck Boulevard on April 10.

He was arrested Thursday night for that theft without incident.

The 39-year-old man has been charged with three counts of theft under $5,000 and three counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

Meantime, the 32-year-old man has been charged with one count of theft under $5,000 and one count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

Both men are scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court at a later date to face the charges.
