HRM directs people to donate to United Way’s wildfire relief fund

By CityNews Halifax Staff

Halifax Regional Muncipality says it has seen an outpouring of support and people urgently wanting to help since the wildfires sprang up earlier this week.

On Wednesday, fire officials said the wildfire in Tantallon had consumed approximately 837 hectares in the region and forced an estimated 16,000 people out of their homes.

HRM says evacuation centres, comfort centres and fire stations aren’t ready to receive donated items as their focus is still on fighting the fires at this time.

The Municipality recommends people instead give to the United Way Halifax’s Wildfire Recovery Appeal as a way to help support communties impacted by the fires.

To help out, people can make a financial contribution on the United Way’s website.

According to HRM, those funds will help people rebuild in the days to come with basic needs, groceries, connection and mental supports.
