Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for HRM

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Halifax Metro and Halifax County West.

The national forecaster said Saturday evening that a line of thunderstorms over Hants and Colchester counties will slowly continue eastward this evening.

Some developing cells in Lunenburg County may continue eastward into Halifax, which has the potential to see rainfall at a rate of 25 millimetres (mm) per hour.

Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm watches when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, and torrential rainfall.

The latest watch comes after heavy downpours occurred on Saturday morning in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and the surrounding area.

The rain was responsible for localized flooding, forcing Halifax Regional Police to close portions of Highway 111 and Wyse Road until the waters receded.
