Woman facing charges in alleged historical sexual assaults in Valley, N.S.

A former band director in Valley, Nova Scotia is facing charges related to sexual assaults alleged to have happened nearly 20 years ago.

Colchester RCMP said they were notified about the incidents that happened between 2005 and 2007, and on Aug. 25 a survivor, who was a youth at the time, came forward with details about being sexually assaulted while attending the Cobequid Educational Centre.

That same day officers arrested 65-year-old Lorna Elaine Letcher and charged her with three counts each of sexual assault and sexual exploitation. She’s been released on conditions including not being in contact with anyone under 18 and will be in court in October.

“Colchester County District RCMP is aware that Letcher volunteers at the Redcliff Middle School and has also provided music lessons from her residence in the past,” police said in a release.

The Mounties said it’s believed there could be more survivors and are hopeful they’ll come forward.

“Police want survivors to know that they can contact them and discuss an incident before making a decision to further participate in the investigation and court process.”

The Colchester County RCMP can be reached at 902-893-6820.
