Council appoints new acting police chief

Regional council has appointed an acting chief for Halifax Regional Police (HRP).

Councillors approved a recommendation by the board of police commissioners to appoint Don MacLean as acting chief.

MacLean will be taking on Sept. 16, as current chief Dan Kinsella is set to retire the previous day.

Last week, Kinsella announced he was retiring after serving as HRP chief for four years. Prior to that, he served for 33 years with the Hamilton Police Service.

MacLean began his policing career in 1993.

Since 2020 he has held the position of deputy chief of operations, overseeing both the patrol and criminal investigation divisions.
