Cornwallis Street in Halifax renamed in honour of Nora Bernard

Regional Council voted to change the name of Cornwallis Street to Nora Bernard Street last December.

Bernard was a residential school survivor and prominent activist who successfully demanded compensation for residential school survivors. She was also a recipient of the Order of Nova Scotia.

The Monday morning event would include remarks from Bernard’s family members, Millbrook First Nation Chief Bob Gloade and Councillor Lindell Smith, a traditional smudging ceremony and indigenous drumming.

The renaming of the street follows the recommendations of a task force that examined steps toward reconciliation with the indigenous community.
