MacKay Bridge to shut down over next two weekends for maintenance

By Steve Gow

For the next two weekends, motorists should be aware that Halifax’s MacKay Bridge will be shut down to allow for critical maintenance.

The communications manager for Halifax Harbour Bridges says they understand the inconvenience, considering all the events happening around HRM at this time of year but the MacKay Bridge is in need of some work.

Steven Proctor says the 53-year-old cross-harbour span will close at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24 until 5:30 a.m. on the morning of Monday, Nov. 27.

He adds the bridge will also close Dec. 1 to Dec. 4 during those same times and that people should plan ahead.

“Think about how you’re coming into the city if you’re coming to the Parade of Lights or another event,” he tells CityNews Halifax. “Maybe consider another alternative way around (because) if the MacKay is going to be closed, I guarantee the Macdonald (Bridge) is going to be busy.”

Proctor adds that people can likely anticipate slower commutes than normal around Halifax during the work.

He adds the maintenace is required to replace two massive deck sections where cracking has been detected on steel plates during recent inspections.

Proctor says the bridges are safe, and the work is simply proof that inspections are doing their job.
