The Professional Women’s Hockey League hosted its inaugural match on New Year’s Day and several Atlantic Canadians took a leading role in the game.

A trio of Nova Scotians are playing for Toronto’s PWHL team, which is led by captain Blayre Turnbull from Stellarton.

Meantime, Halifax’s Jill Saulnier is on the New York squad, which faced off against Toronto in the history-making match.

Home team Toronto lost to visiting New York by a score of 4 to 0 with Saulnier notching one of the game’s markers.

The Toronto squad also boasts Allie Munroe from Yarmouth and goaltender Carly Jackson from Amherst.
