Impaired driving crash causes power outage in west end of Halifax

Many residents in the west end of Halifax woke up in the dark Tuesday morning.

Power is now restored but the Nova Scotia Power outage map showed about 3,100 customers at one point without electricity in an area south of Joseph Howe Drive stretching northward to Connaught Avenue.

The utility said the outage resulted from a vehicle accident in the area.

NSP was able to restore power to most of those customers just after 6 a.m. Tuesday.

In a release Tuesday afternoon, Halifax Regional Police said that a motor vehicle collision on Joseph Howe near the Armdale rotary resulted in downed power lines.

Police said officers arrested the driver, a 51-year-old man, who showed signs of impairment.

The driver was taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

HRP said the investigation is ongoing and charges are expected.
