RCMP take down speeders, drunk driver in provincial ‘hot zones’

Mounties charged dozens of people after conducting traffic enforcement over several days in areas they are calling “hot zones.”

Between Dec. 2 and 6, police were patrolling and stopping motorists in Digby and Yarmouth counties, focusing mostly on impaired and dangerous driving.

“These projects show the impact of teamwork and targeted enforcement,” Cst. Greg Bowie, Southwest Traffic Services, said in the press release. “Impaired driving and reckless behaviour put lives at risk. Drivers need to understand that impaired driving, speeding and operating unsafe vehicles are not only illegal, they can be deadly.”

On Dec. 2, RCMP were in Kings County issuing several charges for speeding. According to the release, there were 22 offence tickets handed out for speed infractions, five for other issues, and two for illegally possessing alcohol.

A few days later, in Digby County, police arrested a 49-year-old man for impaired driving after a vehicle was seen travelling the wrong way down Highway 217. The same day, on Dec. 4, officers caught a vehicle speeding 68 km/h over the limit.

The man operating the vehicle was travelling 118 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. As a result, the 55-year-old was issued a $2,422.50 fine, and his vehicle was seized. He was caught with an expired licence plate, an altered safety inspection sticker and no insurance, police detailed.

A further 16 tickets were issued in Yarmouth County for open alcohol, illegally transporting cannabis and operating vehicles with revoked licences.

RCMP said officers will be out on roads throughout the holidays, conducting similar blitzes.
