New report shows the way for Nova Scotia to fight future wildfires

A new report is finding strengths and opportunities for improvement, looking back at the fights against last year’s wildfires in Nova Scotia.

The 2023 Nova Scotia Wildfire After-Action Report was put together by Calian Group Ltd., looking into the wildfire response from the Department of Natural Resources.

It has found a lot of good, including successful coordination and a strong, collaborative approach to last year’s unprecedented wildfire season.

The report also calls for some changes, including more broadly offering wildfire training across the province, training more incident command management, and strengthening protocols around the use of air support.

DNR’s Jim Rudderham told CityNews Halifax that work has already started to implement some of the 20 recommendations.

“We certainly support the report’s findings,” he says. “And we appreciate how it might help us prepare for wildfires in the future.”

Rudderham continues to stress the importance of keeping an eye on the provincial burn safe map.

He is also asking people to take fire restrictions seriously in hopes of avoiding another devastating wildfire season.
